North Pacific Humpback Whales
Today was an exciting afternoon for our guests and crew alike! Our main vessel, Supercat, travelled south of Victoria with our passengers. We travelled about 10 miles away from the harbour, and it is here we encountered humpback whales!
These whales are one of the world’s largest baleen whales. They may measure up to 60 feet in length and weigh up to 80,000 lbs. We were able to see this species’ incredible size and strength as a whale surfaced, rounded its massive body and tail-fluked before diving. These tail flukes may measure 15-18 feet in width; it is no small animal!
Today was a special day for Five Star; we were able to take great snapshots of our main vessel from the new addition to our fleet, The Salish Shadow. Our new vessel handled the rougher water beautifully on its sea trial.
It was a great adventure to introduce our guests to this massive and graceful species, and to experience such a thrilling day on the waves!
