Orcas, Humpbacks & Pelicans
Today we had a wonderful encounter with Resident Orcas, Humpbacks & Pelicans 🙂
What an amazing day, we had Jpod off Sheringham and being very playful! We got to enjoy a fantastic encounter with the J16’s including J16 “Slick”, J26 “Mike”, J36 “Alki”, J42 “Echo”, J50 “Scarlet” and J52 “Sonic”. As we watched the Orcas we got to see tail slaps, spy hops, porpoising and breaching, it was fantastic 🙂 We also watched as J26 “Mike” hunted a Salmon and was joined by some of his siblings. Other Orcas could be seen in the distance as they were spread out heading west. In fact as we got on scene the only other boats around left and we had the Orcas to ourselves 🙂
On our way out to the Orcas we saw a number of blows from Humpback Whales so we kept an eye out for them as we headed home. Near Beechey Head we encountered multiple Humpbacks, including 3 that were playing together and in a kelp bed. Every now and again we see a Humpback playing with the kelp, it is their version of a kelp spa 😉
Finally we headed to Race Rocks where we not only encountered lots of Seals & Sea Lions but also Pelicans 🙂 We counted a total of four Pelicans at Race Rocks, 3 close together on the west side of Race and one on the east side. Seeing Pelicans in the Salish Sea is not common so it was an exciting discovery! The last time we saw Pelicans (a couple of years ago) they were also hanging out at Race Rocks.
It was a wonderful day to be experience the Salish Sea in all its beauty!
