Southern Resident Killer Whales
We headed out east after leaving the Inner Harbour today. After crossing the international border, we found Southern Resident Killer whales on the southwest side of San Juan Islands!
With only 76 remaining individuals, it is always special to encounter these critically endangered whales in the Salish Sea. They are solely fish eating Killer whales and Chinook salmon make up over 90% of their diet. We encountered them southwest of San Juan Islands on both our morning and afternoon trips today where they follow the salmon runs as the salmon make their way back to the natal rivers.
Our guests got to see several of their surface-active behaviours today, including: tail-slapping and breaching. There was an especially active calf in the afternoon breaching over and over again during our trip today.
